QUEST Descendants

Of Riplingham, Parish of Rowley, East Riding of Yorkshire

1892 RIPLINGHAM, is a hamlet about one mile of Rowley. It contains 1,250 acres of land, belonging chiefly to C. P. Sykes, Esq., who is lord of the manor, and Col. Harrison-Broadley. Rowley Church is St Peters, Old Rowley Village was lost by clearance and the present Village is Little Weighton

QUEST descendants lived in Yorkshire, Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire & London in England. Wales, Canada, United States of America, Australia

NOTE:- All names are numbered from 1-270

Those in bold blue + 2 i. are the persons who continue in the tree.

Research Note: The first 6 children born to Thomas Quest were bapt on the same day which suggests they moved to Rowley Parish from away.

Assumed Thomas and John were brothers. John moved to Hull and then to Lacolle Quebec Canada

The surname QUEST/QUIST is not common in Yorkshire in the IGI or the 1841 census
There are recordings in the Sheffield and Rotherham areas, but very few

Thomas Quest b 1800 at Thorpe Salvin was also a Publican in 1851 as were many in the family, not included in the IGI
So it is difficult to locate where the family residing in the East Riding had their origins

See the website for The English Settlers of Lacolle   The English Settlers of Lacolle, Quebec including QUEST, ELLERTON & AKESTER

Many of the descendants of Thomas became Publicans and 3 served in the Police Force, one being a Superintendant of the West Riding Police.

Some members of the associated familes were killed in WW1 with details on the Honours Page

She was a very shy 'old maid sister' of my Grandfather. I can vividly remember her sitting at my Grandfather's house
at the side window overlooking the side driveway. She would be sitting here hour after hour in her later years.

According to Albert Edward Victor Quest, his grandfather, Capt William Quest, came from Hull about 1830, and became
Harbour Master at Newport Docks in 1870. As his son, Albert, according to Father, was born in Hull maybe, he must
have come to Newport at a later date
Only proof that William Kerton Quest was great grandfather is that he appears in an 1881 census. as being a son of
George Quest. 1 yr at this time IGI records, BaC009152, So 919438

Teresa WISE:
Theresa Holt-Quest ran a grocer/chandlery shop on dockside in Newport. She does not appear in the 1891 census,
though Dad remembered going to her shop.as a youngster

NOTE: - The following are records related by family members in America
Henry was 17 when he immigrated to Canada from England in 1887. The rules were to stay in Canada for 1 year but he
only stayed 2 weeks. He later was known to have said "that it was the only dishonest thing I ever did". Naturalization
papers listed him as entering the United States about 15 May 1988.
Went to Huron Ohio and stayed for twelve years both farming and working on the railroad. For part of that time he
worked out of Norwalk Ohio as a section hand for the New York Central Railroad.

Naturalization papers (of minors) copy is in file. Henry was granted his Naturalization papers and Citizenship on
6 November 1893.
Probated copy of marriage record in Huron County Oh files.

Moved to Toledo in the spring of 1899.
Because of his intense interest in politics, he was never an elected official but given the unofficial title of "the
twelfth councilman " of the city of Toledo.

Henry listed in the Toledo City Directory of 1899-1900 as living at 128 Lake Shore and as in Car repair at the LS and
MS RR
Henry listed the same in the 1900-01 Directory
Henry listed the same in the 1901-02 Directory except listed as a Carpenter
Henry listed the same in the 1902 Directory
Henry listed in the 1903 Directory as living at Detroit Avenue @ South and occupation as a Machinist Head
Henry listed in 1904 Directory same as 1903 except 524 was added for address.
Henry is listed in the Toledo City Directories of 1905, 1906, 1914 and 1920 living at 524 So Detroit Ave. and
with Occupations of Machinist Head and Foreman with the New York Central.
Retired as Shop Superintendant of the NYCRR at Airline Junction in Toledo.
Henry is from Swanland, E. Riding ,Yorkshire England which is a town * East of Hull on the Humber River. There is a
picture of Swanland in the photo files.

Henry was the youngest of the 12 Andrew children and responsible for most of his siblings coming to America.
I remember that GG would always wear a white flower (usually pansies) in his lapel on Mother's day in honor
of his Mother. When his flowers were in bloom, he would also wear something in his lapel when going to Church.

Dorothy Messmer has two pictures in her home which were in the Andrew home. One is a picture of a cobbler shoeing
a horse and the other is a picture of a barge in England. Note on the bottom of the picture says "Hexthorpe Flatts-
Doncaster"

Buried in . Also in the plot at Woodlawn Cemetery are nine other family members:
Elizabeth Andrew
John Andrew
Rhoda Andrew
Dorothy Andrew
Annie Rothery Jones
Arthur Simpson Sr
Susan Rothery Simpson
Edward Bailey
Charles B Bailey Jr

Elizabeth immigrated to the United States about 1894.

To the day she died, my Grandmother Andrew always dropped her H's like all good people from England do. One
expression I particularly remember is when she called my Grandfather in from the garden by saying," Enree" !!

She was a very small woman, barely 4' 10" tall and had a glass eye which would always look sideways at you.
While Elizabeth was in England she was employed as a Domestic Servant.

There is a copy of a certificate in the files awarding Elizabeth a sum of ten Guineas from the will of Mr Matthew
Turner of Beverley Parish outside Hull. Dated 10 January 1889. She lived in for a period of seven years in the
family of S M Marillier at 1 Leo Villas. Beverley Road-Hull

Notes for Charles Betzler (Sr) BAILEY:
A letter dated January 1988 is on file from Charles Sr with a description of his knowledge of the Bailey Family
history.
Another letter is on file with his description of his life from birth until 1988.
Started to go to a Swedish Church School in Elkhart until his Father pulled him out and entered him into a Methodist
Church School.
Went to both Davis and TriCities Business schools. Primary subjects were penmanship, bookkeeping and accounting.
Charlie tried to enlist in the Service in 1917 but was color-blind to certain colors. Speaks of Hank Rigney being
turned down for not being heavy enough and buying lots of bananas to put on weight but it did not work. Tried to
enlist in the Marines but got up to the head of the line and was told that they were all filled up. Finally was on the drafted list late in 1917 and was supposed to go to Chillocothe Ohio to be inducted but at the last minute the
war was declared over and they were not called up. He says it just was not to be.

Was baptized in Trinity Methodist Church. Record on file.
Charles and Myrtle Betzler offered to move CBB Sr to California in the 1915 era and sponser his education but
the offer was turned down by Esther Bailey..

CBB Sr enlisted in WW I in 1917 but his folks would not sign the papers. He eventually was drafted in 1918 and
ready to be inducted at Chillicothe Ohio but the War was terminated and his entry into the service was cancelled.

1942 C B Bailey was working for the Railway Express Agency and needed a Birth Certificate to obtain a clearance
to handle military REA packages during the War era. He travelled to Elkhart in search of a Certificate but found
it had been burned along with other records in a fire. He eventually obtained a Birth affidavit from Trinity Methodist
Church which sufficed. A copy of the paper is in the records.

Additional records of CBB Sr employment ETC are still in his possesion. (1989)

1920-1968 with the REA
1946-1968 with the Brotherhood (Union) in Columbus and Washington, DC.
1963-1968 in Washington, DC.

Dad Bailey tells of one of his first jobs as a truck helper with REA. Tips were commonplace at some of the regular stops and the driver made sure Dad was on the tailgate at the time of those stops.

The 20th Century locomotive was given to Henry Andrew by the YMCA of Toledo as an award.( when??). It and the Pioneer Association plaque are to be part of CBB Jr's family memos after CBB Sr passes on.

CBB Sr caddied at Inverness Country Club for 6-7 months in his teens. Remembers caddying for R A Stranahan Sr.
Did not know the clubs to give RA but Stranahan understood and said "thats all right, I'll pick the correct club.

26 January 1990 Country Club Estates Samoan Club Dinner--Honored 6 longtime Masonic members who were between 64 and 70 years masons. Dad Bailey was honored as one of this group..
Dad Bailey was proud of all the cars he has driven in his lifetime:
Hupmobile--Bought by George General and CBB SR would
take his Mom and Dad for Sunday drives in the car. George General did not drive.
Oldsmobile--Got this from Frank Wittke who drove truckjs for REA.
Green Dodge--
Brown Terraplane--
Plymouth 2-tone--
Dodge Royal--
White Edsel--
Mercury--
White Torino--Florida
White Tempo--(1985-1991)

Dad Bailey also talks of the Wells St Claire car that his Dad bought after CBB SR was married. Tom Bigler drove
this car for George G. The car was a chain drive and was too big for the garage on Lake Shore Drive.

Although maybe with some redundacies, the following was written by CBB SR on 4/10/91:
From birth (4-12-1900) to marriage (06-23-1920):
Born in Elkhart Indiana April 12 1900 living with my Grandmother on Corona Street. My Grandmother had a small
truck farm just outside of Elkhart. She had a cow, chickens and a billy-goat. My Dad , at that time, was operating a
boiler shop with several workmen. My Mother's Mother lived about two miles from my Father's Mother with only foot
transportation and in the winter months, I was bundled up, placed in a box sled and pulled by my Mother this two
miles. She lived on Franklin Ave. at two family home owned by my Grandmother and Grandfather. My Mother had a brother,Emil a dentist, office in home. My Grandfather was a blacksmith for the NYCRR> I was sickly, I guess because I was raised on goats milk. In 1908 we had a severe depression and my Dad lost his business and money in the bank. He got a job with the NYCRR as a boilermaker. Job lasted only a short time and was laid off but retained seniority. He then went back to boiler work. Jobs close by and some far away such as General Electric in Schenectady NY, Farbanks Morse in Three Rivers where we moved to and lived one year and a half.
Mother and I still lived in Elkhart until 1910 when things were getting better. My Dad was called back to work by the
NYCRR and was offered a foreman's job as a boilermaker. We finally moved in 1910 to Toledo, Ohio and rented a home on Dale Street close to my Dad's work in Airline Junction. I believe we moved to a newly built home on Lakeshore Ave.
closer to my Dad's work. RThis was around 1914 or 1915. This is where I quit Wayne School. I told the teacher I did not come to school to clean erasers, but to learn something. My life has been a good one and my Mother and Father was so good to meit hurt feeling, more than mine. They are both gone and I decided long before they left me I would make it up to them. I tied as you read all the jobs I tried out and the education they bought for me. Yes, REA, the Brotherhood and getting married to a wonderful lady, Annie Evelyn Andrew.
Married 63 years Member BRC 70 years

I will be 91 on April 12, 1991.

Years 1920 up
On June 18, 1920 I hired out as a laborer with the American Express Company which was renamed as Railway Express Agency
on July 1, 1920. I worked all jobs at Toledo, Ohio except train Messenger. Was offered an Agency but turned it down. I
was active in several jobs with my Union the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks. I took a leave-of-absence in 1944 and was elected to Chairman of the Ohio State Legislative Committee.. I was elected for 3 five year terms of office.
In 1959 I was appointed to a vacancy in Washington DC as National Legislative Representative for the Clerks. I worked
this Office for 5 years and retired in 1967 and moved to Florida.

CASEY STENGLE When Cbb Sr had a route on Monroe St. he used to pick up and deliver from the Mud Hens (Swayne Field) He met Casey Stengle, who at that time was Manager of the Baseball team in Toledo. Casey went on to be successful leading the New York Yankees. Mom Bailey met Casey in Washington in later years and he asked her if Tiedkes was still in business in Toledo.

Charlie died in his sleep on the morning of March 26, 1992.
Charlie had talked several times about the demise of the Railway Express Agency and the ultimate success of United
Parcel Service. UPS was started by former REA brass who felt that the job of parcel handling could be done another way. They were right!!
